A theoretical model is developed for the total IR band absorption in planetary atmospheres. A simplified analytic expression is defined on the basis of the Elsasser band model. It is assumed that the spectral band is composed of various vibration-rotation bands with identical band contours, and that each narrow spectral region in a vibration-rotation band is an Elsasser band. Attention is given to the effects of low-intensity lines on the total absorption detected. The expression derived for the total absorption is asserted accurate to within 20 percent, which compares favorably with the predictions of other models.
