Quantitative calculations are presented for the mechanism proposed by Liu et al. (1987) to explain the statistically observed relationship between the (spherical) accretion rate of an AGN and the logarithmic gradient of its 2-keV X-ray and 250-nm UV luminosities, l(X) and l(op). The theoretical basis of the model and the steps in the analysis are explained in detail, and numerical results are presented graphically. The apparent saturation in the l(X)-l(op) curve is attributed to repeated Compton scattering (by thermal electrons) of X photons in the dense region close to the central black hole.
