The survey of Ca II H and K emission conducted by Vaughan and Preston (1980) represents a large homogeneous sample of the chromospheric activity of late-type main-sequence stars. For stars in the neighborhood of the sun, this survey is nearly complete, and it can, therefore, be employed for statistical tests of stellar activity. It is shown that the observed large-scale distribution of chromospheric emission in the Vaughan-Preston diagram can be modeled using a smoothly varying decay of chromospheric activity with age. A description is provided of the observational data and its calibration in terms of a relative flux scale. Monte Carlo techniques are employed to simulate the diagram relating chromospheric emission and color.
