The distribution of trigonometric parallaxes in both x and y coordinates is examined in order to determine whether or not their combination into a single value is justified. Parallaxes in both coordinates are found to be unbiased, and the estimates of their precision in the y coordinate are systematically in error in the same sense at the four observatories that have published parallaxes in both coordinates. The publishing of pi(x) and pi(y) separately is suggested.
