The ionizing agents of the D region are analyzed using a numerical model where the spatial-temporal distribution of the neutral and ion composition of the mesosphere and lower thermosphere is computed for given height profiles of the turbulent diffusion coefficient, molecular nitrogen, and temperature of the neutral atmosphere. The model employs one-dimensional equations for a weakly ionized plasma. It is shown that the relative importance of ionization sources in the D region is largely determined by the season and the time of day.
