Telescope Mounts: Very Large Telescopes
Scientific paper
Nearly all projects for new Very Large Telescopes, at least those with full operational range, use alt-azimuthal mounting concepts, because these allow a very compact telescope design. A new alt-azimuthal mounting system is conceived, which involves unique direct, pyramidal load-transmission charaecteristics from the telescope centre of gravity of the foundations, thereby improving the system's dynamic behaviour.
