Allowing for convection, an Alfven wave generated in the neutral sheet can be stationary relative to the earth, and the hydromagnetics of a wave with an Alfven Mach number of about 0.01 predict that the wave normal should be nearly perpendicular to the magnetic field. After adopting a linear approach in the present discussion of these phenomena, computations indicated that nonlinear effects were responsible for the approximately uniform current density. Attention is given to a plasma sheet boundary crossing which illustrates the theory in virtue of allowing a first-order estimation of scale sizes to be made in the tail.
