A prototype has been designed and constructed for the acquisition sensor of a spaceborne optical communication apparatus; this sensor detects the optical signal transmitted by another terminal and measures the two-axis position of the incident beam. Attention is presently given to the ability of the sensor to operate with minimal modifications over the wide range of conditions encountered in the GEO-to-GEO and LEO-to-GEO spacecraft communications regimes, with a view to the critical factor of detection threshold choice for various input signal powers, background noise levels, and operating frequencies.
