The accurate determination of the division corrections for the graduated circle of an automated photoelectric transit circle is considered. A method based on randomization of the measuring order of all the divisions is presented for the simultaneous derivation of unbiased microscope scales and the division corrections. The method makes possible the clear separation of the time variation of the scales from each Fourier component of the graduation error. It is shown that, when the unbiased scales are used, two positionings of a pair of microscopes are sufficient to complete three sets of measurements for three independent rosettes. A modified version of the measuring scheme proposed by Miyamoto and Ishii (1982) is presented, along with a dual-purpose scheme for the simultaneous derivation of unbiased scales and division corrections.
