The ALI method has been generalized to include treatment of overlapping, active continuum transfer and overlapping lines. The linearity of the iterative equations is maintained in this method by consistent use of the psi operator rather than the lambda operator. The method has been applied to a sample problem of pure helium, which includes 23 levels, 31 lines, 22 continua, three stages of ionization, and electron scattering. Velocity fields of order of a few Doppler widths were also included by means of an observer's frame formulation. The convergence of the solutions was found to be comparable to that achieved in the previous pure line method.
