A simple analytical expression for the flux factor of the amplification near caustics of gravitational lenses is proposed. The flux factor is shown to be useful in evaluating the strength of high-amplification events (HAEs) which occur mainly by microlensing. It is demonstrated that flux factors can be used for statistical purposes in numerical simulations of gravitational lenses. In order to estimate the source radius from a HAE, the present method is applied to extended sources, integrating over that part of the source which is on the bright side of the caustic where each source point produces two image points.
