A continuum survey of the Galactic plane at submillimeter wavelength, ATLASGAL, using the bolometer array LABOCA at the APEX telescope, is in full swing. Its aim is to detect massive molecular cores forming high-mass stars in the whole Galaxy. We started an ammonia survey of the northern sources using the Effelsberg 100-m telescope. First results from this years' observing runs reveal that ammonia line emission can determine important properties such as the column density, gas kinetic temperature and dynamics of the clumps. In addition, the kinematical distances to them derived from the measured line velocities result essentially in an unbiased 3D view of massive star forming clumps in the Galaxy. We therefore propose to measure the ammonia (1,1) to (3,3) emission of new massive cold ATLASGAL sources of the fourth quadrant of the Milky Way. Their properties could be compared with these of the northern clumps to look for changes of massive star forming clump properties with the Galactic environment. Moreover, the observations of northern and southern clumps could build a statistically relevant and well characterized database for the selection of different phases of massive star forming clumps.
