Both absorption and emission are reported from three metastable levels of NH3 toward W3(OH), a compact H II region. An analysis of the intensity ratios of hyperfine satellite components in the absorption lines indicates an optically thick gas in local thermodynamic equilibrium, while a similar analysis performed for the emission lines suggests that the emitting gas toward W3(OH) is optically thin. Comparison of the apparent and true optical depths of absorption implies that the continuum source is not uniformly covered by the absorbing gas. One absorbing clump of NH3 appears to exhibit a peculiar motion with respect to the average velocity of the emission line region.
