An idealized model for self-gravitating cylindrically symmetric clouds that contracted to an equilibrium configuration from an initially uniform state is considered which is bounded by an external pressure (thermal plus magnetic). An exact equilibrium solution is obtained and specialized to two choices of a free parameter that can characterize self-gravitating neutral hydrogen and dark clouds. A steady-state solution for ambipolar diffusion is derived, a local time scale is calculated, and the results are compared with Spitzer's (1968) model. It is shown that the equilibrium parameters of the present idealized model (e.g., radius, density, and magnetic field) are in reasonable agreement with observed or inferred values for self-gravitating neutral hydrogen and dark clouds.
