The ambipolar diffusion of ions and electrons with a magnetic field in the temperature-minimum region of the atmosphere of the sun and of cool stars is investigated. It is shown that, in local magnetostatic elements, such magnetic ambipolar diffusion can be more efficient than the ambipolar diffusion under the pressure gradient by a factor of vA/vs, where vA and vs are Alfven and sound velocities. In the solar atmosphere, the magnetic ambipolar diffusion can determine the dynamical and thermal behavior of magnetic flux tubes in active and ephemeral regions, and small-scale elements of spots and chromospheric 'mustaches'.
