Pleistocene muds collected over a wide area of the Amazon deep-sea fan display light rare earth element (LREE) enrichment patterns when normalized to the North American shale composite (NASC). The patterns appear to reflect the results of extreme in-situ weathering combined with particle size sorting rather than source rock composition or diagenetic processes. This explanation is supported by the mineralogical and major element compositions of the muds; they are highly aluminous (20-26% Al2O3) and contain large amounts of kaolinite.
