One of the most important fields within amateur astronomy in Norway is the study of variable stars. Several important discoveries have been made, and there have also been important contributions to our understanding of these stars. Variable stars have been observed systematically since the beginning of this century and amateurs have made large efforts in monitoring these stars. A summary of the amateur contributions in Norwegian variable star astronomy is presented.
