Mirrors: Coatings

Scientific paper

In order to have sufficient aluminum onto the filaments to be used for the coating of larged astronomical mirrors, the authors have conducted experiments of pre-wetting the filaments. Two vacuum chambers for evaporation coating (1.6-m and 38-cm in diameter, respectively) were used at the Advanced Technology Center (ATC) of the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan. Successful operation of the first aluminization of the 8.3 m primary mirror of Subaru proved the feasibility of using the pre-wetted filamets.
