The paper presents new methods for direct measurements of near-earth refraction, for flexure investigation, and for the measurement of zenith distances which make it possible to eliminate the effects of flexure and room and local refraction as well as errors in the circle readings. The results of experimental measurements of room refraction in the meridian circle house and of the horizontal flexure of the meridian circle of the Engelhardt Astronomical Observatory are described. The use of an autocollimating mirror fixed relative to a vertical line with an arbitrarily oriented reflecting surface is suggested.
