Information theory indicates that classical techniques for estimating the accuracy of series of astrometric observations are suitable only when their errors follow the Gaussian distribution. It is proposed that a generalized standard error be used when these errors have a significant, nonzero excess. It is shown that the failure to take into account the excess in the error distribution sometimes leads to a more-than-sixfold underestimation of the variance of the standard error.
