An Alice universe is one in which the particle/antiparticle distinction cannot be defined consistently at every point of space. We study the question of whether Alice gauge configurations actually exist, working in the framework of `SO(10)' grand unification. The answer depends on the choice of the gauge group and on the topology of spacetime. We give a complete analysis of the problem for four `Alice subgroups' of Spin(10) and for all spacetimes of the form 0264-9381/14/9/010/img1, where S is any three-dimensional, locally isotropic, homogeneous Riemannian manifold.
