Various scenarios for the ejection of matter by the primary component of Algol binaries are possible, depending on the masses of the two component and on their distance from each other. Algol-type binaries are characterized by irregularly variable periods. IUE observations reveal that certain Algols have elevated Al III, Fe III, Si IV, C IV, and N V ionization levels.
