This paper deals with the incorporation of the ring current into a self-consistent description of Alfvén mode instabilities in drifting plasmas, as encountered during solar wind-comet interaction. The distribution of the picked-up cometary ions contains two sources of free energy, namely a ring in velocity space perpendicular to the solar wind magnetic field and a parallel drift relative to the solar wind protons. Both can excite Alfvénic mode instabilities in different parameter regimes. For the purely growing, nondispersive modes the parallel drifts are destabilizing, whereas the ring current has a stabilizing influence.
