We present preliminary results from our ongoing narrow-band imaging survey of a large sample of HI-selected galaxies in the nearby universe. Our targets are drawn from the ALFALFA blind HI survey being carried out at Arecibo using the seven-element ALFA receiver array. The great depth of ALFALFA allows for the detection of thousands of possible targets with the full range of HI-masses to distances well beyond the Local Supercluster. We are utilizing the WIYN 0.9-m telescope to obtain narrow-band Hα images of hundreds of HI-selected galaxies. Ultimately, we plan to observe between 500 and 1000 galaxies, which should provide us with an unbiased view of the star-formation characteristics. We plan to use the data to study star-formation modes in galaxies of all types and masses, including hundreds of HI-rich low-surface brightness galaxies. We will use the images to select targets for follow-up spectroscopy with an eye toward obtaining nebular abundances for interesting targets. Finally, we will use the full sample to derive an estimate of the star-formation rate density in the local universe that is as unbiased as possible by the effects of large-scale structure variations and sampling bias. Here we present an early summary of our progress to date, including the results for the first 150 objects.
