We report on the start of a long-term pulsar survey program at the Arecibo Observatory. This program uses the Arecibo L-band Feed Array (ALFA, a seven-beam system operating at 1.4 GHz with 0.3 GHz bandwidth, and fast-dump digital spectrometers) to achieve a sensitivity to faint pulsars that is unprecedented for any blind surveys of the Galactic disk. Over the next 5 years; the Arecibo ALFA surveys will discover hundreds of new pulsars along the Galactic plane, and significantly increase the number of known millisecond pulsars. Preliminary shallow observations of a small part of the Galactic plane has already yielded the detection of 29 known pulsars, the discovery of ten new pulsars through a standard periodicity search, and the discovery of an eleventh object through detection of isolated dispersed pulses.
