With the antigoritization of serpentinite near Leupoldsgrün, Oberfranken (West-Germany), caused by stress, brucite was formed intermediately. Together with magnetite, the fine-grained brucite filled numerous small joints along schistosity. The formation of brucite was followed by antigoritization and other changes in serpentinite. Simultaneously with changes in the silicate phases several phases of ore, especially magnetite, were formed. Chemical and spectrochemical research on composition and accessory elements shows that the serpentinite of Leupoldsgrün as well as others of the “Münchberger Gneismasso” belong to the magmatic group of ultrabasic rocks. Average contents in serpentinites of Leupoldsgrün have been determined: Ni 0·243 per cent, Co 0·017 per cent, Cr 0·274 per cent. Also Pd and Pt show remarkably high values up to 0·83 p.p.m. Pd and 0·22 p.p.m. Pt. In connexion with the geochemistry of nickel the ore mineral “Awaruit” (Ni, Fe) has been found, described and its genesis discussed.
