Aircraft used in German astronomical investigations and the kinds of studies performed aboard them are discussed. The reasons for using aircraft in astronomy are reviewed, and the Lear jet and the Kuiper Astronomical Observatory (KAO) aboard the Lockheed Starlifter are described. The results of the studies are summarized, and ongoing German studies, including the SOFIA (Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy) aboard the KAO, are addressed. The principal investigators, the instrument, and instrument data for various studies are listed.
