Throughout the 1980s, airborne infrared and visible band sensors have played an increasing role in the fields of law enforcement and drug interdiction. In the 1990s, as more enforcement agencies avail themselves of existing and evolving sensor technologies, a family of issues peculiar to airborne sensor applications for search and rescue, border patrol, security, surveillance and intelligence gathering will be addressed by a rapidly growing industry. Increasingly, single payload gimbals are being replaced by multiple role sensor assemblies, capable of two and even three waveband imaging, target designation and illumination. The ability to provide these multi-function sensor pods and integrate, analyze and store the resultant imagery and data will be a necessary requisite to continue servicing the law enforcement community. This paper discusses some of the applications of visible and IR sensors in law enforcement and the issues peculiar to their use in that community. Sensor technology which is currently available will be described, as well as new sensor developments which will become deployed throughout the 1990s. Particular emphasis will be given to IR and visible sensors, lasers and sensor fusion. A short videotape of IR and visible imagery used in law enforcement will be shown.
