We are proposing a 2-pronged approach to identify and study AGN in the GOODS fields {PID 9425 and 9583}. First, we will identify variable nuclei in the centers of galaxies in both GOODS North and South fields by analyzing the 5 epochs of ACS images obtained at 45-day intervals. A large fraction {60%} of Seyfert-luminosity AGN are expected to vary on month-to- month timescales, which we expect to detect at less than 0.1 magnitude fluctuations in the ACS images. The high resolution capabilities of HST are critical to isolate and measure variability for nuclei too faint to be detected from the ground. This would constitute the first measurement of short- term variability for faint AGN extending to z 1 and will allow us to study evolutionary trends in variability properties for AGN. The second component of our research is focused on the spectroscopically identified AGN in the GOODS-N field. A Keck Treasury Spectral Survey is being conducted in the GOODS-N field using the DEIMOS spectrograph. Broad and narrow-line AGN will be selected from the 2000 galaxies expected to yield redshifts in this field. The high resolution ACS images will be used to separate the AGN from the host galaxy light and study the morphology, size and environment of the host galaxy. Together these studies will address questions concerning the nature of low-luminosity AGN evolution and short-term variability at z 1.
