The extensive image database built from the Mars Global Surveyor data has allowed astronomers to make more accurate determinations of the ages of the surfaces on Mars. As part of this effort, we chose to determine the ages of various areas in the southern highlands of Mars, in locations near Argyre Planitia, the Hellas Basin, and south of the Tharsis Bulge. We selected the images from the Mars Global Surveyor MOC Wide Angle Image database (available at http://www.msss.com/moc_gallery/) for each area. We tallied the number of craters in each image and measured the average diameter of each crater. We categorized the craters by size, and then calculated the number of craters per area in each size bin. We plotted these data on the age isochrons of Hartmann (Icarus, 2005, 174, 294) for Mars and then visually inspected each plot to determine the best-fitting age isochron for each area. The changing surface dust distribution, as demonstrated by extensive sand dunes and areas of dust devil tracks, may cause smaller craters to fill in and make our analysis more difficult. We present the result of our analysis for each region.
