The analysis of the bright parts of the observed luminosity functions determined for 14 young clusters shows that most of these clusters consist of a few subgroups of different age. The sequentially-formed subgroups seem not to differ in their initial mass functions (IMF). The universal IMF resulting from the process of open cluster formation is similar to that of the field star determined by Scalo (1986).
