Using a stellar population synthesis model including several values of metallicity, the effects of age together with metallicity on some well-chosen absorption lines have been investigated. The results of this study were compared to those derived from quite different models. The authors have found that while Balmer lines are less efficient age indicators than expected, in disagreement with the findings of Jones and Worthey, two-index diagrams are very useful for breaking the age-metallicity degeneracy.
