Analysis of comet nuclei through the emissions produced by their volatile parts is discussed. High spectral resolution observations are used to study the emission mechanism of the light, neutral-neutral collisions and to measure line widths. Accurate wavelength measurements are needed to identify fluorescence transitions. Examination of spatial distributions in monochromatic images shows whether the emitter is neutral or an ion. Intensity profiles reflect the nature of the chain linking the primary molecules escaping the circumnuclear region and the observed species. Production rates of parent molecules can be derived from the production rates of dissociation products of a given molecule. The main production processes are photodissociation (the most efficient) photoionization, electron recombination, and gas phase reactions.
