We present measurements of total number densities in the lower thermosphere with a new instrument called `CONE', which basically consists of an ionization gage. The electrodes of this new instrument are made of concentric grids with high transparency. A correction algorithm for aero-dynamical effects (`ram correction') due to reflection of the incoming molecules on the CONE base structure is developed. Intercomparison of total number densities derived from CONE with data from falling spheres shows reasonable agreement in the overlapping altitude range.
