For most of the objects targeted for observation by amateurs, changes in their appearance are usually very subtle at best. Variable stars, or the rotating bodies of Mars and Jupiter, are exceptions to a generally rather static picture, but even here the changes can scarcely be described as visually particularly dramatic. Moreover, the period of useful visibility of any given planet or variable star is usually limited in any single year. Only the brightest object in the sky, our own Sun, can offer daily visibility (weather permitting) combined with constant changes, with the added drama and excitement of the unpredicted and unexpected.
