Mentoring may be considered a personal relationship that involves a partnership between an experienced individual and a more junior individual for the purpose of empowering the junior member to achieve greater professional and personal development. This talk will explore diversity mentoring in astronomy and physics along with its role in facilitating successful careers as scientific researchers. I will review the characteristics of programs that have achieved this goal to some degree. Mentoring at three levels are considered: the transition to graduate study, at the K-12 level, and in the early to mid-career period. Suggestions will be presented for advancing diversity in the astronomy and physics research ranks through application of proven mentoring principles.
