This symposium, which discusses studies of the atmosphere, the earth, and the sea and describes imaging systems for earth observations, contains papers on remote sensing of the earth's atmosphere by IR absorption spectroscopy, a conceptual design of Stratospheric Aerosol and Gas Experiment III instrument proposed for the Earth Observing System, the determination of optical properties and composition of atmosphere from measurements of optical spectra, and on remote sensing of gases by the analysis of temporal coherence. Attention is also given to the Earth Radiation Array, the AVIRIS evaluation for classification of rock outcrops, remote sensing of land-based voids using computer-enhanced IR thermography, and spectral image compression. Other papers are on remote sensing of oceanic primary productivity, a medium resolution spectrometer for the European polar orbiting platform, an optical measuring technique for small-scale water surface waves, and imaging spectrometry in the post-Earth Observing System era.
