The article discusses various theories concerning the possibility of advanced life in other parts of the universe. Attention is given to the Malthusian idea of exponential growth and to the elementary-particle and strong-gravitational-field regimes in physics. Limiting factors introduced by the speed of light and Planck's quantum of action are noted. Discrepancies in currently available radio-communication and space-probe techniques are described.
