The tenuous O2 atmospheres around the icy satellites of Jupiter and the rings of Saturn have been modeled extensively, but there have been no experimental studies of the importance of oxygen adsorption at their surface temperatures. We have studied O2 adsorption in porous ice films between 50 and 80 K with oxygen pressures up to 10-4 Torr. Our results show no adsorption above 70 K, but we observed significant adsorption below this temperature. The amount of oxygen adsorbed is proportional to film thickness and decreases with increasing temperature. The adsorption isotherms are of type I, consistent with gas adsorption into microporous ice. All O2 escaped when the surrounding oxygen gas was removed, indicating that adsorbed O2 cannot be trapped in water ice at these temperatures.
