The paper examines the controversy that arose when van Maanen's visual measurements of solar spectra in 1914 showed displacements attributable to the Zeeman effect, indicating a general magnetic field of polar strength of about 50 gauss for the sun. Remeasurements conducted since then have alternately either supported the original findings or been entirely at odds with them, indicating a general magnetic field of no larger magnitude than 1 gauss. Some investigators have interpreted the results as indicating a varying solar magnetic field. A reexamination of van Maanen's plates by photoelectric methods has shown that van Maanen had measured no significant field at any latitude. Thus, it appears that a personal error was involved in van Maanen's measurements, though the issue is not finally settled.
