A variational principle is used to derive an integral expression for the frequencies of adiabatic oscillations of an accretion disk. The expression gives fairly good results in a simple trial function where oscillatory periods of vertical oscillations in low modes correspond to Keplerian periods for annuli of interest, or less if self-gravity is considered, regardless of the detailed structure of the disk model. The periods are of the order of those in quasi-periodic oscillations of dwarf novae or in variable quasars, and arguments based on the virial theorem make these results plausible. A differential equation for vertical adiabatic oscillations is also obtained, which embraces the equation obtained by Van Horn et al. (1980) and that by Vita (1979) as special cases. Exact solutions are found in a number of cases, and agree with results based on the variational principle and order-of-magnitude physical arguments.
