The thermodynamic equilibrium between black holes and matter is characterized theoretically, summarizing the results of Martinez and York (1989). Particular attention is given to the problem of gravitational entropy and the nature of the additivity of the entropies of black holes and matter. It is concluded that no extra gravitational entropy arises as a result of the way changes in the gravitational field are produced by static minimally coupled matter, and that black-hole entropy adds directly to the entropy of matter when the two are in thermal equilibrium. The validity of interpreting S(BH) as entropy in the standard sense of statistical thermodynamics is confirmed.
