The authors have examined the main common spectral properties of the 3 well-known early type (≡B2-B4) V/R variable shell stars EW Lac, ζ Tau, 48 Lib, before and during their variable shell phase characterized by long RV (radial velocity) and V/R (intensity ratio of violet to red emission) cycles. They then recall the two current cool envelope models which could explain the V/R or R/V cycles (in particular the V/R > 1 phase or positive R/V phase): (1) the non-axisymmetrical elliptical disk, and (2) the rotating-pulsating axisymmetrical envelope (or disk) model. The authors present the spectroscopic observations deduced from their comparison of the 3 V/R variable shell stars EW Lac, ζ Tau, 48 Lib which are in favour of or against these two models. They conclude that the 3 stars present signatures of both a geometrical model (elongated disk with apsidal motion) and a physical model (variable radial flux).
