We consider the smoothing application of the adaptive filter, juxtaposed
to the other most commonly used filters, in the surface photometry of
galaxies. We point out the adaptive filter advantages and illustrate
them with the azimuthally shrunk luminosity profiles of the Seyfert
galaxy NGC 5548.
