The HIPPARCOS spaceborne astrometry program is summarized. The primary experiment on board the satellite will measure the positions, proper motions and parallaxes of 100,000 preselected stars to within 0.002 arcsec for positions and parallaxes and 0.002 arcsec a year for proper motions. A second experiment, Tycho, which will exploit the data produced by the satellite's attitude measurement system, will yield astrometric and photometric data of lower precision, but for a very much larger number of stars. The star positions measured by Hipparcos will provide a uniform reference system of unprecedented precision, of considerable importance for studies of the Earth's motion, as a framework for studies of the Solar System, and as a reference for studies in ground and space-based astronomy. As well as providing a high-precision reference system, the accurate measurement of stellar positions, and how they vary with time, will give the basic data necessary for calculating distances to the stars within our Galaxy, and information on the large and small scale stellar motions within it.
