The brightness level of the center of a galaxy is often the same as that of the entire remaining part of the galaxy, and sometimes the galaxy center is even brighter. The frequency range covered by the radiation extends from the radio frequencies to hard gamma rays. In order to reproduce this broadband radiation by means of a superposition of thermal sources, radiators with more than 30 different temperatures would be needed. Taking into account the comparatively small source area for this radiation, it is found that the galactic centers are the most powerful radiators in the universe. Attention is given to the geometric extension of the central source, the broad and narrow line regions, the kind of material present between thermally radiating filaments, problems concerning the supply of matter, extensive radio double sources, apparent superluminal velocities, and the duration of the activity cycles.
