The large X-ray pulsar population of the SMC has been monitored weekly for approximately three years using the PCA detector on board RXTE. Many sources show transient X-ray outbursts with approximately regular intervals between recurrences providing estimates of orbital periods in these systems. These results provide, for the first time, information on activity cycles in a large well defined population of X-ray binaries outside our Galaxy. The project is shedding light on the period and luminosity distribution of the SMC X-ray pulsar population as well as providing detailed pictures of individual systems. These results are expected to aid in determining why the X-ray pulsar population of the SMC is so large compared to what would be predicted if the X-ray pulsar density in the SMC was the same as for the Galaxy.
