We have performed a survey in several wavelengths of a region around a young cluster of Ha emission stars discovered by Herbig in 1958 (ApJ, 128, 259), located near the North America Nebula (the "Gulf of Mexico"), in order to search for more indications of star formation in the area. We got optical Ha and [SII] images obtained at the UH 2.2m telescope on Mauna Kea in 2002, searching for Herbig Haro objects. Ha grism images and VRI photometry were also obtained using the same telescope. At the UKIRT 4m telescope on Mauna Kea we obtained JHK photometry, narrow band H2 (2,122 mm) and [FeII] (1,644 mm) images, and also N (11,9 mm) images of the central cluster. Most of the the survey covers an area of 7'´14'. We report the discovery of 28 new Herbig Haro flows located mostly around Herbig's cluster, but also to it's west. Together with the cluster previously known, we have found 38 Ha emission stars in the region surveyed. The near-infrared images show that there are many embedded sources in that area. The properties of the Herbig Haro flows and the young sources found will be presented. We confirm that low mass star formation is indeed happening in the area, and it is more active than previously thought.
