The properties of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are discussed with special attention given to the nature of the AGN phenomenon, the cause of the variations in brightness displayed by AGNs, the differences among known AGNs, and the details revealed by the latest images taken with the Hubble Space Telescope and other modern telescopes. Based on these observations, a model that accounts for most of the similarities and differences among AGNs was proposed. The model has a black hole at the core of an AGN, with the mass and gravitational pull of perhaps a million to a few billion suns, surrounded by a flat whirlpool called an 'accretion disk' the inner part of which is spinning madly, and a fat doughnut of gas and dust called the torus, slowly circling the disk.
