The cosmological evolution of quasars and of Sy type 1 nuclei as indicated from optical observations is discussed. The number versus optical flux relationship for quasars, Sy 1 nuclei, and BL Lacs is considered. Models based on pure density evolution, where the shape of the local luminosity function is rigorously preserved but the spatial density of quasars sharply decreases as a function of cosmological time, and on a pure luminosity evolution, where the local luminosity function is displaced in bulk toward higher luminosities with increasing z while the comoving density of quasars remains rigorously constant are reviewed.
